West De Pere’s Evans brothers making state run together
The results from the Bay Conference track and field meet on May 12 were unique.
That’s because you kept seeing the same last name pop up in first place.
Jermaine and Tejay Evans combined to win five of the six open runs to power the West De Pere boys team to a fourth straight conference title.
Jermaine captured titles in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, while Tejay won the 200 and 400 in addition to placing third in the 100.
“That was very cool,” Tejay said.
The brothers are now getting set to run at the WIAA Division 1 state track and field meet together.
Tejay, a freshman, qualified in the 200-meter dash, while his older brother, Jermaine, a junior, advanced in the 800 and 1,600.
“It kind of was a given he would come out,” Jermaine said about his younger brother taking up track. “I tell him you have to keep working every single day to obviously get better.”
After battling through a stress fracture last season, Jermaine is making his first state appearance for track.
However, he is familiar to the state stage, having qualified in cross-country the past two years, including a sixth-place finish as a freshman.
Tejay, who plays football in the fall, showed flashes at the middle school level that he would be capable of the fast times he’s produced.
“I’m glad both of those guys could make it down there individual,” West De Pere coach Craig Zellner said.
Perhaps the individual from the West De Pere boys team that has the best opportunity to reach the state podium this weekend is senior Tony Vandenberg.
Vandenberg is seeded fourth in the high jump after placing first at the Ashwaubenon sectional.
“Everybody worked hard for it” Jermaine Evans said about his team’s success.
