Packerland Recap: Algoma girls, Sturgeon Bay boys win team titles
ALGOMA – The Packerland Conference track and field championships were unique for a couple reasons this year.
After transitioning from the M&O Conference for all sports, Peshtigo was competing at the meet for the first time and quickly made its mark with an individual breaking a 25-year-old Packerland Conference record.
The long and triple jumpers at the meet also had to go the distance, traveling 10 miles south to contest those events at Kewaunee’s pits earlier in the day due to the saturated conditions in Algoma.
Overall, it was a fun meet filled with some impressive performances.
The Sturgeon Bay boys team won its third straight Packerland title by topping the newcomer from Peshtigo.
Meanwhile, Algoma won the girls team title, ending Kewaunee’s four-year reign atop the Packerland.
Katelyn Williams won three individual events and was a leg on the Wolves’ winning 400-meter relay, which it won for a third straight year.
Williams won her fourth discus title of her career and third consecutive championship in the shot put. She added another title to her impressive resume by placing first in the 100 dash with a personal-record time of 13.05 seconds.
Khloe Williams, Katelyn’s twin sister, was also a member of the winning 400 relay and posted her third straight Packerland title in the long jump.
Algoma recorded a bulk of points in the throws, where Katelyn Williams, senior Morgan Davister and freshman Bobbi Blahnik placed 1-2-3, respectively, for the shot put and discus.

Freshmen ruled the day in the open runs for the girls as four different freshmen won titles, including Kewaunee’s Lizzy O’Dill (200), Sevastopol’s Olivia Stenzel (1,600), Southern Door’s Lydiah LeCloux and Sturgeon Bay’s Lauren Alger (100 hurdles).
Kewaunee won five individual events, including three by senior Haylie Novak (high jump, triple jump and the 300 hurdles).
Novak’s leap of 35-5 1/2 leads the Green Bay area this season.
Southern Door junior Maggie Grota repeated as the 800 champion, while Kewaunee senior Gabby Czech won her second 400 title in three years.
On the boys side, Sturgeon Bay won the 400 relay for a third straight year and won the 800 relay for the second consecutive season.
Sturgeon Bay senior Hayden Shefchik won the high jump for the second time in three years, while the Clippers also picked up a win in the discus from senior Rex Meikle.
Newcomer Peshtigo won six events overall, including five individual titles.
Junior Max Rauch won the pole vault by clearing 13 feet, 7 inches to break the 25-year-old Packerland Conference record of 13-6 set by Southern Door’s Joe Gilson in 1993.
Rauch’s personal-best mark of 13-9 leads the Green Bay area this year.
Peshtigo junior Mitchell VanVooren swept the hurdles, recording a time of 14.96 seconds in the 110 hurdles, which is the second-fastest time in the Green Bay area.
VanVooren was also a part of the Bulldogs’ winning 1,600 relay, which also included senior Cameron Barrette, who won the 400.
Peshtigo sophomore Jerod Jandt won the 100 by posting the second-fastest time in the Green Bay area of 11.23 seconds.
Southern Door senior Jared Conard won the 200 with a time of 22.53 seconds, the second-fastest time in the Green Bay area this season.
Algoma junior Max Schoening repeated as the shot put champion.
Kewaunee senior Spencer Kirsteatter also was a repeat champion in the 3,200 in addition to winning the 1,600.
Kewaunee also crowned champions with sophomore Max Hanrahan winning the 800 and junior Alex Hewett claiming the triple jump title.
