Notre Dame takes down Ashwaubenon

ASHWAUBENON – The pendulum swung in Notre Dame Academy’s favor against Ashwaubenon Thursday night at Goelz Field.

The Tritons produced more big plays to outlast the host Jaguars 28-17 in a Fox River Classic Conference game.

A pair of Wes Glime touchdown passes in the second half and three forced turnovers overall helped Notre Dame improve 2-0 on the young season.

“They’ve got some pretty big kids out there,” Notre Dame coach Mike Rader said. “We were able to stand in there long enough and make plays when we needed to, but we have a lot of work to do.”

The Tritons went into the half clinging to a 13-10 lead after Ashwaubenon (0-2) took the momentum by closing the gap with a 6-yard touchdown pass by sophomore Cadian Vang to junior Luke Jacobs with 10 seconds remaining.

The 85-yard scoring drive took less than 2 minutes and was set up with an interception by senior Riley Siudzinski when the Notre Dame offense was inside the red zone.

After both teams went three-and-out with punts on their first two drives of the second half, Glime found fellow senior Tommy Martzahl for a 45-yard touchdown.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, Vang tossed a long screen over to senior Cam Wheeler for a 59-yard touchdown with 2:41 left in the third quarter to pull the Jaguars within 21-17.

The Tritons answered a few plays later when Glime found senior Josh Cribben for a 25-yard scoring strike with 4.5 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Glime completed 12 of 19 passes for 212 yards in the game.

The Notre Dame defense stood its ground from there, adding its third turnover of the game on an interception by senior Matthew Re.

Junior Hunter Soletski also had a fumble recovery for Notre Dame in the game, while senior Grady Brick’s interception led to senior Brandon Limoni’s second touchdown run of the first half. Limoni rushed for 173 yards on 30 carries overall.

Vang, a sophomore, was making his first start at quarterback for the Jaguars and got off to rough start in being sacked three times on his first two drives of the game, including two by Soletski. Vang completed 11 of 23 passes for 176 yards in the game.

“Cadian is a tough kid, and I thought he got better as the game went on,” Ashwaubenon coach Mark Jonas said. “That’s a good defense he played against. They rush the passer hard, and he had to scramble a lot. I thought our offensive line got better at covering that in the second half.

“I was thrilled with the effort of our kids today. I really was. As a staff, you can’t ask for anything more.”
