Bay Port’s Huben ready for final state run
The 800-meter run.
It’s not quite a sprint. It’s not quite a distance event, either.
It’s that part of a track and field meet that takes pure grit, determination and heart to master.
Savannah Huben possesses all of those qualities.
“The 800 is more of a mental race for me,” Huben said. “I think I’ve improved in that a lot. I think I know myself better as a runner now.”
Huben advanced to the WIAA state track and field meet for a second straight year in Division 1 for the girls 800.
A three-time Fox River Classic Conference champion in the event, Huben will be aiming to improve upon her time of 2 minutes, 19.55 seconds from last year, which was about 4 seconds off a school-record pace.
“I definitely learned a lot,” she said.
After competing in soccer as a freshman, Huben came out for track and field as an accomplished cross-country runner. She is a four-time state qualifier for cross-country, finishing in the top 30 of Division 1 the last three years.
Although hesitant about doing track and field at first, Huben eventually found her stride in the 800.
She earned the third and final qualifying spot from the Ashwaubenon sectional last week with a time of 2:21.54.
Huben, who will compete in cross-country and track at the University of Indianapolis, is one of four individuals from the Bay Port girls track and field team that will be competing at the state meet this year.
She is joined senior Bailey Cisar (200), senior Olivia Mabry (pole vault) and freshman Ella Meeuwsen (high jump).
Mabry will be attempting to return to the state podium after placing sixth last year.
Meanwhile, Cisar qualified for state for the first time in an individual event. She earned a medal her freshman year as a leg on the 800 relay that placed sixth in addition to making back-to-back state appearances in with the 1,600 relay, which also featured Huben in 2016.
“It will be really exciting and probably very emotional as my last race as a Pirate,” Huben said. “I’m just looking to having a good time and running the best that I can.”
