MADISON – Cody Minor drinks a yellow Gatorade after weigh-ins at each wrestling tournament he competes in.
It’s the Ashwaubenon junior’s favorite flavor, but the taste of winning gold Saturday night at the Kohl Center was much sweeter.
Minor lived up to his No. 1 ranking by winning the Division1 state title at 113 pounds at the WIAA individual state wrestling tournament.
“It feels good,” Minor said. “There is a lot of emotions at first. It’s starting to kick in.”
Minor (44-1) defeated Mukwonago sophomore Tyler Goebel (42-7) to end a title drought in becoming the Jaguars’ first state champion since Mike Taylor (215) and Zak Saevre (285) won titles in back-to-back weight classes in 2008.
Minor won with a 13-10 decision, but late in the match he received a scare when he found himself on his back staring at the Kohl Center lights as Goebel got a near fall to close the gap.
“Just find a way out,” Minor said. “A lot of things were going through my had. I was kind of like passed out. I just had to fight it, otherwise, I knew I was going to get pinned, so it was crazy.”
Minor, who placed third at 106 in his first state appearance last year, was the first wrestler the Jaguars had advance to the state finals since Mitchell Cole finished as the 160-pound runner-up in 2013.
Minor is also the first D1 state champion the Green Bay area has had since Bay Port’s Alec Ingold won the 220-pound title in 2015.
The 113-pound junior is Ashwaubenon’s sixth state champion and he’ll have the opportunity to become the program’s first two-time state champion as a senior next year.
“That’s been the goal,” Minor said. “After taking last year it was getting as many as I could.”
